Showing 10 of 21 logs from Tue 10 Jan 2017 to Sun 10 Jan 21 for @AdamEvans
A lockdown-busting local explore. @AdamEvans: Getting bored of lockdown and in need of an explore, I took the very neglected mountain bike out over some hills around Exeter with very little clue of what I was doing or where I was going. The result was good fun, but very muddy and lots of hills. Despite going the wrong way (down a very large hill at 48.5km/h and having to re-climb the hill further down the valley to get home), I managed to get back before dark. Just as well because I didn't have lights fo ...
Very fortunate to be invited to Switzerland for the lead up to Christmas and learn to ski! @AdamEvans: With a third national lockdown looming I stole the opportunity to dash to Switzerland for 2 weeks before Christmas. Lucky enough to be hosted by Abi's family, this included a 5 day stay in Saas Fee ski resort. Abi's sister is a qualified ski instructor (at 16y/o) so I had 2 days of free lessons and 2 days free-ski. Great progress towards parallel skiing (almost entirely by the end), and some great, long ...
A pleasant walk in evening sun at 27 degrees. 8.3 km, average speed 4.2 (back to standard speed) along the Westport canal, and river Isle lots of swans &curious cows.
A late log of the Uni canoe club trip to Slovenia (4 days) and France (8 days). Paddling rivers mainly G2/3. A good reintroduction trip back into white water kayaking from injury. @AdamEvans: Turns out being in charge of a trip of ~20 uni students isn’t as easy as I had previously assumed. Kayaking was the easy part with someone else taking responsibility for river choices etc. As club captain, I had the responsibility for overall organisation, transport plan, rest day activities etc. Note to self: d ...
Walk from radio masts up over Beacon Batch 5.5 km in brilliant sunshine with stunning views @RichM: First proper walk for Rich since last September after a prolonged period laid up in the care of the NHS. I am so pleased to have achieved this which in itself doesn’t seem much but 5.5km on rough ground from starting the year bed bound after 70 days in ITU, feels so fantastic, hopefully the first of many, thanks Adam for a brilliant walk, now to the Hunters for tea! @JonnyC: Love the log title, and a seriously good achievement given the journey of recent great to see! Welcome back to AL haha :) @AdamEvans: Always a pleasure, thanks for booking in the sunshine and the 5* food. Next for Camp 2 aka ‘THE bothy’...?
A very chilly 8 hour journey from Exeter to Teeside on the Friday left the team tired before the weekend even started, but thankful we weren't camping due to being well and truly 'up north'. The Saturday consisted of the Male K1 event (Tom, Sam, Dan, Adam), Sunday consisted of Womens K1 (Phoebe and Natalie), and mixed class session, including C1 and C2 boats, and the team event in the afternoon. AE chuffed with putting up 2 finishing times on the board on the hardest white water to date (ov ...
@AdamEvans: A day on Dartmoor practicing our feature-finding skills. Included map reading, walking on a baring, pacing, timing, contouring, and justification of position. A few minor hiccups due to some boundaries being marked in blue and some leats in black, or not marked at all, however we muddled through and concluded it's much safer to use contour lines and other non-movable features to prove your location! Perfect weather for a day on the moors.
Introducing Miriam to 'proper' indoor climbing. Group of 3 climbing doesn't usually work however using auto-belays made it go smoothly. Tonio peaking at 6a, Miriam 6b and Adam climbing 6b+. A grueling session left all participants aching for days. Other colleagues very jealous!
A family climbing trip to the indoor wall in Buckfastleigh. With 3 self belay walls and approx. 10 roped walls, as well as two bouldering rooms, the centre has a wide variety of difficulties. A brilliant way to spend a birthday!
After a somewhat distracted morning with a roof tent, this was the first proper trip in the K2 for AE. With RM as front man, AE had control of the rudder leading to a much longer trip than necessary. Once the steering was under control, the return trip was a somewhat serene experience despite the physical strain. With no wind and, by some miracle, no rain, the perfect weather for paddling led to a successful afternoon, even returning before dark. Max speed: 9.3km/h Moving av.: 5.9km/h T ...
